BRUSSELS, Belgium – Google has announced a major two-year investment of €5 billion to significantly expand its Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in Belgium. The commitment aims to bolster the country’s digital economy, create new jobs, and advance its leadership in the European tech landscape.
The announcement was highlighted by the presence of HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium; Pierre-Yves Jeholet, Vice-President of the Government of Wallonia; and Bikash Koley, Vice President of Google Global Infrastructure.
Infrastructure Growth and Job Creation
A core component of the investment involves the expansion of Google’s data center campuses in Saint-Ghislain. This development is projected to create an additional 300 full-time jobs, providing a direct boost to the local economy and expanding Google’s operational footprint in the region.
Commitment to Clean Energy
In line with its sustainability goals, Google also revealed new agreements with energy providers Eneco, Luminus, and Renner. These partnerships are designed to support the development of new onshore wind farms, which will supply clean energy to the Belgian power grid and help power the company’s growing infrastructure needs.
Investing in Digital Skills
Beyond physical infrastructure, Google is launching initiatives to equip Belgians with the skills necessary for an AI-driven economy. The company will fund non-profit organizations to provide free, practical AI training specifically targeted at low-skilled workers.
